Digital Radio Guide

The ABU undertakes wide ranging activities reflecting the current needs of the members. These activities are implemented by the Secretariat's Technical Department. Providing technical information to the members is a major activity of the Technical Department. The activity takes various forms including the publication of the ABU Technical Review and regular distribution of clippings containing a selection of the most useful papers published in technical journals worldwide. Snapshot on print and radio channel promotions on TV

Key Findings:

• 27 per cent rise in print promotion on TV whereas 21 per cent drop in radio channel promotion on TV during January - October 2008 compared to January - October 2007.
• Maximum advertising of print media and radio stations on regional channels during January - October 2008.
• The Malayala Manorama Co was the top advertiser in print promotions and Living Media India topped in radio channel promotions on TV during January - October 2008.
• Sakshi Daily, a new brand of print media and Fever 104 FM, a new Radio station was advertised maximum on TV during January - October 2008.

Growth in ad volumes of print and radio channel promotions on TV.

• Print promotion on TV has seen growth of 27 per cent during January - October 2008 compared to same period in 2007.
• Compared to January - October 2007, radio channel promotion witnessed a drop of 21 per cent during January - October 2008.

Advertising of print publications on national vs regional channels.

• Print promotion on regional and national channels contributed advertising ratio of 62:38 during January - October 2008.
• Tamil Nadu had contributed the maximum (40 per cent) followed by Kerala and Andhra Pradesh with 24 per cent and 13 per cent share of overall print promotion ad volumes on TV during January - October 2008.

Advertising of radio channels on national vs regional channels

• During January - October 2008, 88 per cent of radio stations promotion was on regional channels and 12 per cent on national channels.
• Delhi accounted for 42 per cent share of overall ad volumes of radio channel promotions on TV followed by Kerala and West Bengal with 30 per cent and 12 per cent share respectively during January - October 2008.

Top advertisers in print and radio channel promotions on TV

• Top five publications share accounted for 47 per cent share of overall Print promotion on TV during January - October 2008,where The Malayala Manorama Co, K S Publications Pvt Ltd, Deccan Chronicle Group Of Publications were the top three advertisers.
• Living Media India Ltd, HT Music & Entertainment Co Ltd and Asianet Network were the top three advertisers for radio channel promotion on TV during January - October 2008.
• Top five advertisers share aggregates to 90 per cent of overall ad volumes of radio channel promotions on TV during January - October 2008

New print publications and radio channels advertised on TV (January - October 2008)

• Sakshi Daily, Financial Chronicle and India News Saptahik were the top three new brands of print media being promoted on TV during January - October 2008.
• Top three new Radio stations viz. Fever 104 FM, 94.3 Club FM and All India Radio-Lucknow were advertised on TV during January - October 2008.

AIR show gets special commendation at ABU prizes '08

All India Radio's children and youth show 'Our Home, The Planet Earth' has won special commendation at the the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union's ABU Prizes 2008, announced in Bali on 24 November 2008.

Among the winners in the radio category are - Legacy Disposal Squad (NHK, Japan) - drama, Smile, Joy and Wonderful, Flip The Expectation (KBS, Korea)- infotainment, A Handless City: Viruses and Hands, Which Is More Lethal To Children? (RTHK, Hong Kong) - Children & Youth (Radio), Repeated Abortions (RTHK, Hong Kong) - News (Radio), Two-Year Journey Of Hot Lapindo Mud Flow (RRI, Indonesia) - Documentary (Radio), Let's Go To School (BBC, United Kingdom) - External Broadcasts (Radio) and The Rising Of New Generation Of Chenggis Khan (MNB, Mongolia), which got a special jury prize.

The ABU Prizes, established in 1964 by the first ABU General Assembly, is an international contest for radio and television programmes. The purpose of the contests is to promote the production of radio and television programmes of a high standard, to raise educational and cultural levels, and to strengthen international understanding among the peoples of the countries and areas of the ABU members.

This year, the awards were presented at an awards ceremony held during the 45th ABU General Assembly in the Indonesian capital on 24 November.

BBC chief appointed new Plan CEO

Plan has appointed Nigel Chapman, the current Director of BBC World Service, as its new chief executive officer.

Nigel brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge of global, multi-ethnic, and culturally diverse organisations.

He has worked for the BBC for more than 20 years and held senior management and editorial posts in television, radio and online, many with a strong emphasis on news and current affairs.

As Director of BBC World Service, he is responsible for the overall editorial leadership and management of the world's leading international radio broadcaster, BBC Arabic TV and its new media operations.

In addition to his World Service role, Nigel is also Chair of the BBC World Service Trust - the World Service's charitable arm, which uses communications and new technologies to aid development in some of the world's poorest countries.

Plan support

Nigel is also no stranger to Plan. He has spent over 6 years working at the highest levels of the international Board and Members Assembly. He is currently the Chair of the UK National Organisation.

Paul Arlman, Chairman of Plan’s International Board said: “We are delighted to have someone with such a demonstrated dedication to international co-operation, combined with a great interest in the fate of children and enormous management experience in a complex organisation. Nigel will be a great asset and inspirational leader for the organisation.”

Nigel Chapman, who is married with 2 children, said: “I am delighted to be joining Plan International as its CEO. I know from my visits to see its work first hand, and my time as Chair of the UK Trustees, that Plan has a wonderful reputation for working with millions of the world’s poorest children and their communities and helping them escape poverty. It will be a privilege to lead the Plan team to what we all hope will be a new level of impact and achievement.”

Nigel will join Plan on 1 April 2009, taking over from Tom Miller who steps down at the end of 2008.

Biographies

As Director of BBC World Service, Nigel Chapman is responsible for the overall editorial leadership and management of the world's leading international radio broadcaster and its new media operations.

He has worked for the BBC for more than 20 years.

He has held senior management and editorial posts in television, radio and online, many with a strong emphasis on news and current affairs.

After joining the BBC as a trainee in 1977 he later produced and edited high-profile current affairs television programmes, including Nationwide, Newsnight (where he worked on the first evening programme in 1980) and Breakfast News.

In 1989 Nigel Chapman became the first Editor of Public Eye - the BBC specialist weekly programme on social policy issues.

He edited the series for almost three years until moving to the BBC's south region as Head of Centre, South East at Elstree in March 1992, where he was responsible for local television and radio, current affairs and political output in London and the South East.

In 1994, he was appointed Head of Broadcasting, Midlands and East, based at Pebble Mill, Birmingham.

In November, 1996, Nigel Chapman was appointed Controller, BBC English Regions, responsible for all regional television and local radio programmes across England.

In January 1999, he became the first ever Director of BBC Online, with responsibility for the development of the UK's most popular content website.

In September 2000, he was appointed Deputy Director of BBC World Service.

In that post he had responsibility for relations with the Foreign Office, strategy, multi-media, press, public affairs, marketing and legal affairs.

He deputised for the Director of BBC World Service across the full range of his functions.

He was Acting Director of the World Service from January 2004 to his current appointment in July 2004.

He is also Chair of the World Service Trust - the World Service's charitable arm, which uses communications to aid development in some of the world's poorest countries.

Nigel Chapman is married with two children and lives in Oxford.

Popularising amateur radio

The Coimbatore Amateur Radio Club organised a fox hunt here recently that sought to keep alive the interest in ham operation.
Organiser of the hunt R.R. Balasundaram said the event aimed at popularising ham operation, especially as a medium of communication during emergencies.
The hunt involved the locating of a ‘fox hole’ (amateur radio station) located within a 30 km radius.
Participants had to locate the radio station using the tone that came on their very high frequency radio sets every five minutes.
As for fox hunt, it could be fun and yet very demanding in terms of efforts to locate the station.
The hunt could get tougher as participants neared the station because signals could come from 360 degrees.
A press release explained that ham radio was a ‘scientific hobby’. One could establish one’s own radio station and talk to friends across the world. At the same time, ham offered a solution when all normal forms of communication break down during calamities such as floods, landslips, cyclones or earthquakes. This form of communication also came in handy during rail, road or plane accidents. Ham ensured proper information flow to the community during such incidents, when telephone lines were down.
But, a ham operator could not broadcast news to the public. One operator could communicate only with another operator. But, when many operators were involved, information would get passed on to the general public.
Amateur radio operators should pass an examination conducted by the Union Ministry of Communications and obtain licence for operating a radio station. Persons aged above 12 were permitted to appear for the Amateur Station Operator Licence Examination. No educational qualification was prescribed.
Training for two hours a day for over two months enabled people to take the examination. Interested persons should qualify in a test on Morse code (transmission and reception), communication procedure and basic electronics. Mr. Balasundaram said ham radio was a hobby and the operators should not use it as a means of income.
Coimbatore District had about 200 hams. Apart from being a hobby, the hams in Coimbatore provided a communication back up during motor rallies conducted by the Coimbatore Motor Sports Club. (Source: The Hindu)

I&B Ministry moots news bulletins in private FM radio

A long-standing demand of private FM radio players is set to be fulfilled by the year-end. After Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommended news in private FM radio, albeit with some restrictions, the I&B Ministry has now reportedly given its nod to 261 private FM channels to air news and current affairs programmes produced by All India Radio (AIR).
Of course, the Ministry's proposal would require the signature of Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who is currently admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi following a cardiac arrest. After the Minister signs it, the proposal would require Cabinet clearance.
When exchange4media spoke to a cross-section of FM players and media players about the latest development, they were obviously positive about it, though most were not aware of such a proposal being made by the I&B Ministry.
Uday Chawla, Secretary General, Association for Radio Operators for India (AROI), remarked, "Having news or sports as an intricate part of content will immensely benefit the radio industry and listeners. The point of concern for the Government is deciding the extent to which the news broadcast should be allowed in this phase. In case Phase III gets delayed, we have requested the Government to allow the broadcast of news, current affairs and specifically sports in the interim."
'Value-addition to local content'
Reacting to the news, Tarun Katial, COO, Big FM, remarked, "We welcome this development as it adds richness to the local content on the local channel and would give a boost to the FM station. It would also create some kind of differentiation in the market. We have also prepared ourselves to fulfill these responsibilities and are planning to create infrastructural changes."
Vehrnon Ibrahim, National Programming Head, Radio One, said "After waiting for seven years, I think it is a step forward, though not a step we would like, but certainly a step in the right direction. I see this as an opener and not as a final position. I am looking forward for this and I welcome it and we are certainly prepared for news and current events. I suppose at some point of time we will have a self regulatory body."
Nandan Srinath, COO, Radio Mirchi, commented, "From the listener point of view, the product is certainly getting better. We at Mirchi are certainly ready and prepared to carry news and current affairs and look forward to this soon. If this allows greater stickiness of listenership and more audiences who are not using radio at this point of time to come into the radio fold, then there is an indirect bearing on the revenue stream."
Calling the move a step in the right direction, Harrish M Bhatia, COO, My FM, Synergy Media Entertainment Ltd, opined, "Broadcast of news will increase the listener base and lend more credibility, authenticity and trust to FM radio. Listeners will start taking FM radio even more seriously once news and current affairs are allowed on it."
Nisha Narayanan, Project Head, S FM, observed, "Diversification of content will be the direct implication of the permission to broadcast news in private FM stations. This will not only boost listnership, but also provide headway to advertisers."
Though Kunal Jamuar, GM, Madison Media, didn't see any huge value or even commercial implications coming to the industry, he added that "it will certainly give consumers a differentiated content. I don't see any major changes in terms of revenue".
Uday Chawla pointed out, "If you look at the TV industry, almost 15 per cent of revenue accrues to news channels. Improvement in content translates to more listenership, which translates to more revenue."
Tarun Nigam, Executive Director, India - North & Pakistan, Starcom Worldwide, noted, "The green signal to private FM channels for broadcasting news is reminiscent of the good old Akashvani days in the radio mode. Like TV has a bouquet of channels, radio, too, can witness an upsurge of players, depending on the license fees."
In contrast, Anita Nayyar, CEO, MPG, India, remarked, "Since the USP of private FM is music, the broadcast of news would result in dilution of programming and content. This is like the personification of AIR."
Is a regulatory body needed to monitor news?
Speaking on the need for a regulatory body, Chawla said, "AROI will welcome permission for carrying news and sports content and has offered all cooperation to the Government in this regard, including formation of a self-regulatory content control mechanism."
Radio Mirchi's Srinath added, "Since news and current affairs content would come from AIR, I don't see the need for a self-regulatory body. But over a period of time, we might see a self-regulatory mechanism."
Nisha Narayanan pointed out, "The FM players will not emulate 24-hour news channels, but to safeguard the interests of authentic news, a guideline should be charted out and should be adhered to."
The onus of coherent news broadcast is now on the private FM players. This proposal can be seen in the light of breaking clutter and pushing the contingent of journalism in the hear-hear domain. The development certainly has the private FM industry all excited. Watch this space for further developments.

NIAR Hamtech 2008

AIR first Tamil news bulletin reader passed away

Noted theatre person and character artiste Poornam Viswanathan passed away here on Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 87. Mr. Viswanathan was known for his remarkable performances in Tamil theatre and films. In every role he played, he paid great attention to dialogue delivery and body language. He started performing on stage when he was 18. He later moved to New Delhi for a few years, where he was part of the ‘South Indian Troupe,’ with renowned critic Subbudu. Mr.Viswanathan, who worked as news reader at All India Radio there, deemed it a matter of great pride to have announced the news of India obtaining independence in the first news bulletin broadcast on August 15, 1947. He was transferred to Chennai in 1964. His portrayal of roles in plays scripted by Marina, such as ‘Thanikuduthanam,’ ‘Oor vambu,’ and ‘Kaal kattu,’ won him great acclaim. Mr. Viswanathan, who had acted in plays written by Sujatha, was deeply affected by the writer’s passing away this February. His powerful portrayal of characters in plays such as ‘Kadavul vandirundar,’ ‘Adimaigal’ and ‘Oonjal’ were hailed by the audience. His passion for theatre made him start a troupe of his own, ‘Poornam New Theatres.’ Mr. Viswanathan’s performance in films such as ‘Varusham 16,’ ‘Keladi Kanmani,’ ‘Aasai,’ ‘Mahanadi’ and ‘Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu’ are unforgettable. He was at ease in both comedy and melodrama. He served the Press Information Bureau in Chennai as assistant information officer and later served as editor of ‘Thittam’ and senior correspondent of ‘Yojana’ magazines brought out by the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry. He penned several plays and short stories. He was very interested in the fine arts and was often spotted at sabhas during the December music festival. Mr. Viswanathan is survived by his wife, son and two daughters.

New director general, All India Radio (AIR)

G Jayalal, deputy director general, All India Radio (AIR) has been promoted as director general of the country's premier audio broadcaster.
Jayalal, who was serving as deputy DG, programming, planning and development, took charge as new the DG last week. He has been appointed on a temporary basis.
The post has been filled after a gap of more than a year, since the tenure of last DG (AIR) Brijeshwar Singh had ended in May 2007. Singh, an IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, was a full-fledged DG of AIR.
B S Lalli, CEO, Prasar Bharati, had been handling additional charge as DG of both AIR and Doordarshan till recently. Information and Broadcasting ministry had earlier objected to a retired IAS officer holding charge of the DG of DD and AIR. Lalli, a retired IAS officer, was appointed as CEO of Prasar Bharati last year.
Subsequently, the ministry was sent a list of nominees for the two posts by Prasar Bharati, and Noreen Naqvi was appointed as DG (DD) on the basis of seniority, though her appointment too is on a temporary basis.
Jayalal's appointment has also been ordered on seniority basis. He joined AIR in 1978 and had served as station director of Tirunelveli, Port Blair, Puducherry, Thiruvananthapuram and Bangalore, before heading the southern zone of AIR stations as DDG.

On radio for 168 hours, Dheena sets new Guinness record

Big 92.7 FM's Radio Jockey (RJ) Dheena has broadcast live on radio continuously for 168 hours and entered the Guinness Book of World Records, bettering the previous mark by 33 hours. He is "ecstatic" after breaking the existing world record of 135 hours set by Italian RJ Stefano Venneri in 2007. Dheena began his on-air marathon Aug 21 at 5 a.m. that ended at 5 a.m. on Thursday.

Though Dheena, who hosts "Big Vanakkam" on Big FM's station at Chennai, broke Venneri's record at 8:01 p.m. Tuesday itself, he continued on to set a new record which would be tough to break. "I didn't want to be a sprinter. I wanted to be like a marathon runner who would lead by hours and I have done that. I wanted the target to be very high so that for the next five to 10 years, no one should even think of attempting this," Dheena told media.

This was not the first time Dheena attempted an on-air marathon. In August 2007, he had worked non-stop for 92 hours and seven minutes. For his Guinness record, the FM station ensured all medical requirements for Dheena. A team of physicians was present to monitor his health. "I used to get five minutes rest in every hour and after every 12 hours, I used to get an hour's interval for myself. In that time, I used to take a nap. I kept eating something in between and that's how I managed," said Dheena, who joined Big FM in 2006.

Before taking on this challenge, Dheena prepared himself physically and mentally. "I undertook rigorous yoga practice to boost my mental endurance and also went to the gym regularly to keep fit and be awake for so many hours," he said. Dheena is overwhelmed with the response of his listeners who gathered outside the Big FM office to meet him. He said: "I have got a tremendous reaction from the people in Chennai and I have managed to get a huge fan following. They were constantly concerned about my health and me. It was really motivating. People across ages came over to meet me, called me and helped me through this feat." He says that the experience has taught him to be "patient, focussed and to concentrate with no sleep".

RJ DHEENA CREATES HISTORY COMPLETES 92.7 HRS ON AIR

An ecstatic RJ Dheena had tears in his eyes as he completed the 92.7 hour marathon that he set out to achieve on August 20th , 2007at 3.00 pm, which ended at 11:07 am on August 24, 2007. The on-air stunt has created history and BIG 92.7 FM, is overjoyed and is now taking forward the papers with the LIMCA book of records. The marathon was a true test of fortitude, endurance and of course a true radio lover.

BIG 92.7 FM had ensured all arrangements required like medical assistance, food, energy drinks, string of well wishers to ensure Dheena is in high spirits and also a well chalked out programming plan to ensure the successful completion of the marathon. Friends, family, school kids, fans thronged the BIG 92.7 FM office throughout his 92.7 hour stunt, of course not to forget his co-jocks who kept encouraging him and connecting him to people across different parts of the city. There were also celebrities like Sruthi Hasan, Aishwarya Dhanush Rajnikanth, Naresh Iyer, Priya Mani, Swarnamalya, Venkat Prabhu, Vijay Adhiraj, actress Priyanka and Mumtaz who came forward to encourage Dheena and ensure he was in high spirits. In fact they were quite amazed at his enthusiasm since he was livelier than others. People coming in to meet him, brought coffee – to help keep him awake and fresh, food - some of his favorite food that was specially prepared by the listeners who brought them to the office for him.

Since such a marathon had never been attempted before and hence there were no learning’s for RJ Dheena to go by. Dheena had been preparing himself for this marathon both physically and mentally and undertaking several fitness, yoga and meditation classes to ensure the highest levels of patience, commitment and focus. These preparations along with prayers to the almightily and seeking blessings from his near and dear ones and of course listeners who kept calling in and encouraging him, helped him complete the mammoth marathon!

German radio to air programme in three Indian languages

Deutsche Welle (DW) Radio, Germany's international broadcaster, will soon broadcast programmes in three Indian languages, an official said Tuesday.The broadcaster and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) have signed an agreement to this effect, varsity pro-vice chancellor Latha Pillai said Tuesday.Gyan Vani FM, the radio channel of IGNOU, will facilitate broadcasting of DW-RADIO programming in Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and English over campus radio at 29 universities across the country.'This will facilitate students of our 29 associated universities getting a broader perspective of subjects happening across the world,' IGNOU spokesman Ravi Mohan told IANS.In addition, 'Tomorrow Today', the science magazine from DW-TV, will be integrated into the schedule of Gyan Darshan, an educational TV channel of IGNOU that operates nationwide via satellite and cable.In return, DW radio has agreed to support IGNOU with training courses for community radio operators and journalists. Germany's international broadcaster will oversee several intensive courses per year at the School of New Media Studies at IGNOU.'We are happy to have the opportunity to reach out to students throughout India,' said Petra Schneider, head of sales and service at DW radio.

Users of amateur radio, also known as, HAM radio, have urged the Centre and state to include their hobby in school syllabus. They say this would take the technology to youngsters and since amateur radio often turned out to be the only mode of communication during disasters, it would help the HAM community to reach out more. In the west 70 to 80 persons in a population of one lakh used HAM radios but in India only one,in 20 lakh people used them, said Inarapan of Kalpakkam, who has been using these radios since 1985.

"The investment needed for setting up a HAM radio is not huge. The cost of a basic model is as cheap as Rs. 500. Most of the people in India are unaware of the advantages in using HAM or they are misled by people who do not know about it. These are the main reasons for the low number of HAM users in India," he said.Some of the famous HAM radio users include late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, late minister for commerce and industry Murasoli Maran and actor Kamal Haasan. During the 1999 Orissa super cyclone and 2004 tsunami HAM radio was the only mode of communication used for coordinating rescue and relief measures.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle on Sunday on the sidelines of the International Lighthouse and Lightships Week (ILLW), Ajoy, member of the Bangalore Amateur Radio Club said, "CBSE has added HAM as a lesson in disaster management subject for classes 8, 9 and 10. The state should also follow CBSE and include HAM in their syllabus."K Rajesh, another HAM user from Chennai said, "HAM is an excellent mode of communication for people across the world. Thousands of new radios let India's believers hear Gospel message

International Gospel radio network Trans World Radio has doubled the goal it set earlier this year to distribute 2,000 radios to believers in India. The enthusiastic response to their campaign has allowed them to send 4,000 radios that can be used by their owners to hear the Gospel.
TWR will distribute the radios through an indigenous network of evangelistic house groups across India as part of the Radio Homes project. Members of these small groups come together to listen to and discuss Bible teaching over the radio with the support of a local coordinator.
TWR has seen huge success in its mission work in India. In a previous project spanning the last two decades, TWR planted 650 churches, each one with around a hundred members. All of the churches grew up out of listener groups set up by TWR workers in villages with no previous Christian witness. "Thanks to the support of listeners in the UK we hope to carry on spreading the Gospel in the most unreached, unchurched areas of the world," the ministry said.

CRI Guangxi Contest

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. To introduce this beautiful region to our listeners, CRI and the Guangxi Tourism Administration are sponsoring a five-part general knowledge contest on Guangxi. VOICE OF TIGERS CEASES SATELLITE TRANSMISSIONS FROM SERBIA

The Voice of Tigers (VoT), the official radio of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which started transmissions on 1 June from Serbia, ceased its transmissions on June 9. According to reliable sources, the Government of Serbia terminated the broadcast licence granted to VoT to retransmit to Europe, North Africa and Middle East via satellite, when the authorities came to know that VoT was the official broadcast organ of a banned terrorist outfit.It is reported that several influential contacts helped the LTTE to obtain the transmission licence for the broadcast of Tamil FM radio through a Serbian satellite.

However, the Serbian authorities were not aware of the true nature of the contents of VoT, and the moment they realised the connection between the VoT and the LTTE, the transmission was terminated.Previously the VoT, as well as the LTTE?s television service, the National Tamil Television (NTT) used the US-based Intelsat 12 for radio and television transmissions. Intelsat terminated the transmissions when it was pointed out that the LTTE was a listed terrorist organisation in the US. Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation(SLBC) stopped

SLBC Stopped the MW Tx

From 01-06-2008, Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation(SLBC) stopped the MW Service on 873 KHz to IndianListeners. This frequency mainly used for TamilService. This particular service started on 1925. Atpresent the only MW Tamil service from SLBC is on 855KHz for the Sri Lankan Tamil listeners.Few years back they stopped the evening service on 873KHz. From January 2008 they reduced the morningservice.

According to the SLBC officials, they didn'tget advertisement for that service. They spend threelahks Rupees per day for transmitt the programme toSouth India. Here in Tamil Nadu so many private FM’sacquired the SLBC clients for the advertisement. This is also the one of the reason to stopped the wellknown historical service.

Radio Free Asia is proud to announce the release of its 21st QSL card honoring German physicist and radio pioneer, Heinrich Rudolph Hertz (1857 - 1894). Hertz was the first to broadcast and receive radio waves. He demonstrated the existence of electromagnetic waves by building equipment that not only produced radio waves, but also detected them. His experiments with electromagnetic waves led to the development of the wireless telegraph and the radio. His name is also used for radio and electrical frequencies; hertz (Hz). The QSL card below will be issued for all valid RFA reception reports from April 1 – June 30, 2008. This is the second in our series of QSL cards honoring radio pioneers. Future QSL cards will include other radio pioneers like Nikola Tesla, Reginald Fessenden, and others. Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, nonprofit corporation that broadcasts news and information to listeners in Asian countries where full, accurate, and timely news reports are unavailable. Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA currently broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin, the Wu dialect, Vietnamese, Tibetan (Uke, Amdo, and Kham), and Uyghur. RFA strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in its editorial content. As a ‘surrogate’ broadcaster, RFA provides news and commentary specific to each of its target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack. RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of its broadcasts comprise news of specific local interest.
