* Radio Broadcasting on the Island of Cyprus - 2: The Local Radio Scene - 00:53
Radio broadcasting came to Cyprus very late compared to so many other countries on all sides of the Mediterranean.  The radio scene in Cyprus began after the tumultuous events of World War 2 were ended, and while other political struggles were taking over in some of the Mediterranean areas.  The first radio broadcasting station to arrive in Cyprus was transferred from another country; and this is what happened.
Radio broadcasting for the benefit of British armed forces personnel began in the year 1932 when several low power transmitters were constructed by Royal Navy technicians in the Mediterranean.  Radio receivers were tuned to the BBC on shortwave for the reception of the first Christmas broadcast by His Majesty King George 5, and the low power transmitters rebroadcast the live programming to other ships and land based locations in the Central Mediterranean.
Eight years later, that is during the year 1944, there were three BFBS British Forces Broadcasting Stations in Palestine; mediumwave JCPA and shortwave JCKW in Jerusalem, and JCLA in coastal Haifa.  During the increasing hostilities in the Middle East three years later, plans were laid to move the three stations from Palestine, establish BFBS Mediterranean headquarters on Malta, and transmit network programming from Malta on shortwave to distant regional relay stations, including the transferred facility on Cyprus.
The first consignment of personnel and equipment, taken from the Haifa station, voyaged from Palestine on the ship "Empire Lifeguard" and they arrived at Famagusta, the east coast seaport on Cyprus, arriving on May 3, 1948.
Doreen Taylor in her whimsical, yet authoritative volume, A Microphone & A Frequency, tells us that the first BFBS station in Cyprus was installed at what was then a disused Royal Air Force airfield at Lakatamia in central Cyprus.  A German DX magazine informs us that the transferred radio facility was housed in a converted barn.
The first broadcast from this relocated radio station took place on June 3, 1948.  Research in early editions of the World Radio Handbook does confirm the fact that BFBS at Lakatamia was indeed the first radio broadcasting station on the island of Cyprus.  At this stage, BFBS Cyprus was on the air from two transmitters, 1420 kHz with 1 kW mediumwave and 7220 kHz with 100 watts shortwave.             Over the years, BFBS Cyprus has been on the air from several different locations, utilizing several different transmitters on mediumwave, FM, and shortwave.  These days, this station is still on the air, from three different locations with two program channels, though all on FM.

Four years after the BFBS station was inaugurated in Cyprus, the local government established a radio broadcasting organization under the name, Cyprus Broadcasting Service, with the intent of erecting local radio stations for complete coverage of the entire island.  The new radio station at Nicosia  with 10 kW on 692 kHz was officially opened at 5:00 pm on Sunday October 4, 1953.
On shortwave, CBC the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, has taken out program relays via two different shortwave stations located on their island.  Somewhere around the year 1969, CBC programming was noted via the BBC shortwave station located at Zygi on their south coast.
A 15 minute program in the Greek language was aired each Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening over three BBC shortwave transmitters and beamed to England for the benefit of Cypriots abroad.  When the BBC shortwave station was closed earlier this year, the program was still on the air, though at thirty minutes duration.

However, in 1970 & 1971, CBC Cyprus took out a regular daily service on shortwave via Cyprus Radio in Nicosia; two hours daily and seven hours on Sunday.  The programming was a relay from the regular mediumwave service intended for Cypriots abroad, particularly in England.  One transmitter only, listed at 30 kW with callsign 5BA, carried this relay service on 11745 15260 or 17875 kHz.
In the northern part of the island of Cyprus, Radio Bayrak is listed and they commenced their radio broadcasting service somewhere around the year 1970.  In 1971 they are listed with six mediumwave stations, and in 1976 they are listed with a service on shortwave also, 7 kW on 6150 kHz.          These days they are shown with a multitude of stations on FM, and just one on mediumwave 1098 kHz with two transmitters at 50 kW each.  On shortwave, their lone 25 kW transmitter is located at Yeni Iskele.  The antenna system was recently upgraded and the newly improved signal was expected to be on air at the beginning of March last year.

On the next occasion when we look at the radio scene on the island of Cyprus, we plan to focus on the other international radio broadcasting stations located on this eastern Mediterranean island.

Radio is the medium, science the message

Madurai schoolchildren lend their voices to educate the masses out of superstitious practices

P. Karthik, M. Chitra Devi, P. Velumani and A. Siddarth may not be professional radio jockeys. But their voices, presentation skills, and dialogue delivery would make anyone believe they are. What adds sheen to their talents is the fact that they are all schoolchildren aged between 10 and 12.
These students of a government-aided middle school at Palkalai Nagar near here, whose parents are stone quarry workers, cattle rearers, taxi drivers and casual labourers, have been lending their voices to a number of science popularisation programmes aired by All India Radio (AIR) across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The programmes were produced by AIR-Madurai at the behest of Vigyan Prasar (VP), an organisation set up under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology for promoting scientific and rational thinking. Groomed by their teacher K. Malarselvi, who scripts the programmes, the children are now set to be part of a new series to be broadcast next month. "It was my teacher who spotted my ability and encouraged me. I stay in the hostel attached to the school and felt very happy on the day when my father, living in Thenpalanji, heard my voice on the radio and called me up to say that I spoke very well. I also feel very happy to disseminate scientific concepts through folk performances such as 'Villu Paatu," Chitra Devi said.
T.V. Venkateswaran, academic head of VP, said that involving school and college students in the production process had helped the students hone their inherent skills. Describing his organisation, a body comprising 50 scientists, as a facilitator, he said that the field work for developing a scientific temper among the people is left to students and science forums.
Radio audiences had grown and radio was still the best medium to reach the rural masses, he noted. " We aim to banish superstition and irrational practices," he added.
However, the biggest challenge in taking scientific concepts to the masses is in making the programmes interesting. Though the programmes were produced in different languages and dialects, the prime concern was that they should not end up becoming boring discourses. That is why students, teachers and NGOs are involved in the task of making them interesting.

J. Balasubramaniam, head, Department of Journalism and Science Communication, Madurai Kamaraj University, said that his department had now been given the task of assessing the quality of educational programmes that had been produced and aired so far by AIR. The assessment report would help VP in future programmes.
P. Rajamanickam, executive member of All India People's Science Network (a conglomeration of science fora across the country) and principal investigator appointed by Vigyan Prasar for evaluating a series of 10 educational programmes aired so far, said that the programmes were produced with the sole aim of taking the message of science to the masses.
"Apart from students, teachers and NGOs, we have enlisted a fisherwoman to explaint the process of making dry fish. Now we are going to assess if what we did was right or not, whether the language used in those programmes was effective and whether the principles of effective communication were followed in them," he said.
S. Murugesa Pandian, programme executive of AIR-Madurai, said that natives of Madurai should be proud of the fact that the programmes were produced here and aired across the State. "From next month, we have planned to air a series of episodes on acclaimed mathematicians.
"Of the 26 episodes planned on the subject, the script for 13 are ready. One of the scripts that is under consideration for the series has been prepared by Palakalai Nagar Middle School students on none other than Indian math genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. The episode will unravel many little known facts about the genius, including his fondness for munchies during his childhood," he said with a smile.

Results: The big 2013 AWR Annual Wavescan DX Contest, Focus on Africa
We here at the AWR DX program "Wavescan" take pleasure today in announcing the list of winners for the big 2013 Annual DX Contest, "Focus on Africa".  This contest took place during the month of July, and all entries were received at the Indianapolis address by the end of August.
You will remember that there were five parts in the contest this year and you were invited to:-

Part A: Make a list of what you consider to be the 5 top QSLs in your collection from shortwave         stations in Africa.

Part B: Provide a photocopy of each of these QSLs.

Part C. Make a list of the 5 top shortwave stations in Africa from which you do not hold a QSL and     that you would like to add to your collection, and state the reason why.

Part D: Prepare three reception reports for the broadcast on shortwave of any AWR programming    beamed towards Africa.

Part E: Include three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection.

We are grateful again for the large number of entries received this year from so many countries around the world, and we appreciate the time consuming effort that so many listeners exerted in preparing their excellent entries.  We note that many entries were from new participants this year, and we are grateful to those also who have entered on previous occasions during the past 37 years of contesting.  From a long list of entries, we have chosen the following listeners to whom awards will be sent.
Here are the 2013 Continental Winners, each of whom will receive a copy of the 2014 edition of the "World Radio TV Handbook" early in the New Year:-

And now, the name of the World Winner in the big 2013 AWR Annual "Wavescan" DX Contest, "Focus on Africa".  This year's winner also presented his entry in a neat colorful book style folder with several pages in full color.  He will receive a book of his choice, one of the authoritative volumes on shortwave history written by the noted radio historian Jerome Berg of suburban Boston in the United States.

The World Winner for 2013 is:-           Tony Ashar     Depok             Indonesia.

Once again, we acknowledge with appreciation the many entries in this year's "Focus on Africa" DX Contest.  Thank you for participating, and we trust that you enjoyed participating as much as we did in perusing all of the interesting entries.  All entries will be acknowledged through the post, and all reception reports will be verified, though it will take time, perhaps well into the New Year, to process them all.
We invite you to enter our 2014 DX Contest, which will feature "Focus on Asia", similar to this year's "Focus on Africa", though there will be an additional new innovation.  The 2014 contest will be staged during the month of September, due to the fact that shortwave propagation conditions during this year's contest in July were not so favorable.

News Item

We here at the Indianapolis office of Adventist World Radio welcome all reception reports from listeners in any country throughout the world.  These reception reports may be sent through the post or by email, though by post with return postage and an address label is preferred.  Currently we hold many hundreds of pending reception reports that are not yet processed and it will take some time to process them all.  All reception reports are verified in the time honored system of verification with a traditional printed QSL card, even though it costs more and it occupies more time to do so.  It is not necessary to send follow up reception reports by email, as this tends to slow down our verification process.  In addition, we prefer reception reports prepared neatly on paper, rather than an audio file as an attachment to an email message.  We know that you will be pleased to receive your long expected traditional QSL card from Adventist World Radio when the postman delivers it to your regular mailbox.

Indian Govt issued

for forming various groups. group 1 for Mobile and Amateur services

4 to consider possible new allocation to the amateur service on a secondary basis within the band 5 250-5 450 kHz in accordance with Resolution 649 (WRC-12);

that, in the current allocations to the amateur service in the HF
bands, there is a significant jump, which causes many problems in terms of
communication when the MUF falls below 7 MHz and the lowest usable
frequency (LUF) is above 4 MHz, with the result that amateur stations
would need to be able to access spectrum at around 5 MHz in order to fulfil
their communication functions, particularly when they are engaged in
providing emergency communications in response to disaster situations,

RADIO FREE ASIA ANNOUNCES 17TH ANNIVERSARY QSL CARD

SEPTEMBER 2013

Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces the release of our 17th anniversary QSL card. RFA's first broadcast was in Mandarin on September 29, 1996, 2100-2200 UTC. Acting as a substitute for indigenous free media, RFA concentrates its coverage on events occurring in and/or affecting the countries where we broadcast; they are: Burma, Cambodia, Laos, North Korea, Peoples Republic of China, and Vietnam. RFA does not express editorial opinions but provides news, analysis, commentary, and cultural programming. A combination of U.S. government-operated transmitters and a variety of shortwave leased facilities support RFA. Thiscard will be used for all valid reception reports from September 1 – December 31, 2013.

RFA's 17th Anniversary QSL card.
RFA is a private, nonprofit corporation that broadcasts news and information to listeners in Asian countries where full, accurate, and timely news reports are unavailable. Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA currently broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin, the Wu dialect, Vietnamese, Tibetan (Uke, Amdo, and Kham), and Uyghur. RFA strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in its editorial content. As a 'surrogate' broadcaster, RFA provides news and commentary specific to each of its target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack. RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of its broadcasts comprise news of specific local interest.  More information about Radio Free Asia, including our current broadcast frequency schedule, is available at www.rfa.org.

RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports.  Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they help us evaluate the signal strength and quality of our transmissions. RFA confirms all accurate reception reports by mailing a QSL card to the listener.  RFA welcomes all reception report submissions at http://techweb.rfa.org (follow the QSL REPORTS link) not only from DX'ers, but also from its general listening audience.  If you have a smart phone, feel free to use the QR code below to access the automated reception report system and submit your reception reports to the web site.

You also have the option of using the following Microsoft Tag from your smartphone. The free mobile app for your smartphone is available at http://gettag.mobi.

Reception reports are also accepted by email at qsl@rfa.org, and for anyone without Internet access, reception reports can be mailed to:
