வரலாற்றினை இன்று சுவாரஷ்யமாக சொல்லுவது ஒரு கலையாகி வருகிறது. சென்னையைப் பற்றி பல புத்தகங்கள் வெளிவந்தாலும், இந்த மூன்று பாகங்கள் கொண்ட "Madras: A 400 year record of the first city of Madras India" தனித்துவமானது. இதனை திரு.எஸ்.முத்தையா தொகுத்துள்ளார்.

இதில் என்னை கவர்ந்த கட்டுரை, சென்னையில் வானொலி வந்த வரலாற்றினைப் பல முக்கியத் தகவல்களுடனும், ஆதாரத்துடனும் பதிவு செய்துள்ளார் திரு.சி.ஆர்.ராமசாமி.

World Radio Day / உலக வானொலி தினம் 2022

Proclaimed in 2011 by the Member States of UNESCO, and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day, February 13 became World Radio Day (WRD). ஆஜாத் ஹிந்த் வானொலி அஞ்சல் அட்டை

சுபாஷ் சந்திர போஸ் அவர்களால் தொடங்கப்பட்டது ஆஜாத் ஹிந்த் வானொலி (Azad Hind Radio). இது தமிழிலும் ஒலிபரப்பியது என்பது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இந்திய அஞ்சல் துறை இன்று வெளியிட்ட ஆறு அஞ்சல் அட்டைகளில் ஒன்று இந்த வானொலியை மையப்படுத்தி வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

வானொலி பெட்டியை மையப்படுத்தி தமிழில் மிகக் குறைந்த திரைப்படங்களே வெளிவந்துள்ளன. அந்த வரிசையில் சமீபத்தில் வெளிவந்த இந்த 'ரேடியோ பெட்டி' பூசான் திரைப்பட விழாவில் வெற்றி பெற்றது. அந்த ஆண்டின் சர்வதேச கோவா திரைப்பட விழாவிலும் திரையிட தேர்வான ஒரே தமிழ் படம் இது மட்டுமே. தற்பொழுது யூடியுப்பில் இது முழுமையாக காணக்கிடைக்கிறது.

Christmas radios: One Day Broadcast

 

There are many radios around the world that broadcast only one day a year. They are all broadcast only on shortwave. Many shortwave radios have been shut down recently. This includes, in particular, the ‘Radio Saint Helena’ radio broadcast from Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. This radio broadcasts only for half an hour on the fourth Sunday in December of the year. Serious radio lovers around the world have been waiting for a long time to hear that broadcast.

Can you forget listening to St. Helena Radio in Tamil Nadu from 12.30 pm to 1.00 pm?. After searching various places to listen to this broadcast, the last place we came across was Mr. Balu (A) Balasubramanian's house on the edge of the forest, near the ground behind Tambaram Madras Christian College (MCC). For many years, he listened to Radio Saint Helena broadcasts with the help of a Long Wire antenna on the terrace of his house. The QSL Cards they sent today still hold the remnants of those memories.

A recent report on the International DX Club of India (IDXCI) Whatsup group. It's about radio broadcasting of the Grimeton Radio. They broadcast only one day a year in CW Mode (Morse Code). They also uploaded the full YouTube page of the radio's Christmas special broadcast.

One of the highlights of that radio station is that it is the only radio station in the world to be on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Grimeton radio station is located on the outskirts of the city of Varburg in southern Sweden.

The Grimeton Radio Station in Varburg was built in 1922-24. It has been used extensively for early wireless Atlantic communications. It is currently a well-preserved monument. Here the transmitters for shortwave transmission are mounted on six 127 meter high steel towers.

Although not currently in regular use, the transmission equipment here is maintained in working condition. They still broadcast only one day a year. The 109.9 hectare site features majestic buildings with Alexander transmitters. Architect Carl Åkerblad designed these buildings in their neoclassical style. Structural engineer Henrik Kreüger designed the antenna towers.

It can be considered as the tallest structure built in Sweden during that period. This shortwave transmission station is a great example of the development of telecommunications. It is a large transmitter station based on shortwave transmission technology that existed 100 years ago. This radio is still the only surviving example in the world.

It is noteworthy here that this year 24 December 2021 Indian time from 2.00 pm to 2.30 pm they was transmitted through Morse code at 17,200 kHz (16 meters). A Free Press Matters: VOA @ 80

December is always a festive month for international radio lovers. Listeners will send Christmas and New Year greeting cards to all radios. The radio station also sends greetings, calendars, diaries and Year End Gifts to its visitors.

Souvenirs like these have dwindled after the recent decline in the number of shortwave radios. After a long hiatus, America's public service broadcaster "Voice of America" ​​sent the most beautiful monthly calendar for the year 2022 to the university address today.

One of the highlights of this calendar was documenting the broadcasters of the 47 language services of Voice of America. They have also published photos of the old language section.

This year VOA is celebrating its 80th year. The radio was launched on 1 February 1942. It also did Tamil language broadcasting in the meantime. Can we forget Nallathambi Vellaiyan who announced the landing of man on the moon live from Washington that day?

The Last edition of World Radio TV Handbook 2022

 

The "World Radio Television Handbook", an encyclopedia of shortwave radio lovers, concludes its 76-year journey with this 2022 year edition, sad news for radio enthusiasts and researchers like us.

Of the 76-year books, I have the version for most years except a few. The five cartons containing all of those books have become the talk of the family, each time moving to the rented house.

For the 15 years we have been publishing Sarvadesa Vaanoli (International Radio) magazine, for 16 years we have been publishing Quarterly Magazine called Dxers Guide, 54 weeks we produced Vaanoli Ulagam (World Radios) for External Service of All India Radio, my first Tamil book, Ulaga Vaanoligal (World Radios) were also published because of  The WRTH (World Radio TV Handbook).

I got my first WRTH for myself, and when Mr. Adrian Peterson came to Erode for the AWR listeners  meet in 1999, they handed over the 2000 edition directly. The scent of that first book still lingers in the memories.

Every WRTH book I have has a story. At the moment it is worth noting that most of the books were obtained while working as the Technical Monitor of the German public service broadcaster, Deutsch Welle (DW).

I have to thank Mr. Arasu (VU2UR) for helping me to collect 30 years of WRTH. Mr. Shanmuga Sundaram (VU2FOT), Mr. Ilampuranan, Mr. Jose Jacob (VU2JOS), Mr. Alokesh Gupta (VU3BSE), Mr. Sandiban Basu were among those who built the bridge between me and WRTH.

Radios like AWR, BBC, CRI, DW, RN, RV, RVA, SLBC, RTI, RFA, VOA, NHK and TWR have somehow helped to get WRTH. 

Survived the rain floods of Chennai and is still one of my treasures today. The book that carried so much information said it would never come out again, just like a close friend leave us in the middle of sea!

 

A Special cover on "Voice of Liberation"

A Special cover on "Voice of Liberation" on Goa's Freedom Struggle was released by the Department of Posts Goa Division on 17 December, 2021 as a part of the Goa@60 Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Goan Liberation Movement. These secret radios were operated by Late Vaman Sardesai and Ms Libia Lobo Sardesai, continuously from November, 1955 till December,1961.
