2RN was the first radio broadcasting station in the Irish Free State. Overseen by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, 2RN began broadcasting on New Year's Day 1926. Teilifís Éireann (later called RTÉ Television) began broadcasting on New Year's Eve 1961.
From 2RN to the present day, RTE is at the heart of the story of broadcasting in Ireland. Today, as the national public service media, RTÉ's video and audio services, digital products and orchestra serve an increasingly diverse, local, regional, national and global Ireland. RTÉ's centenary milestone is the story of the evolution of a nation as much as it is the story of broadcasting on our island.
