The Vatican Radio Director General, Father Federico Lombardi advised a press conference on June 12 2012 that the Vatican Radio has decided that shortwave and mediumwave transmissions to most of Europe and the Americas from the Santa Maria di Galeria centre will be terminated as from 1 July 2012, and he called for a "new chapter in the history of Vatican Radio" evolving "from shortwaves to new communications strategies". The report also mentioned the reduction means downsizing of about 50% of the centre's transmission time to allow Vatican Radio to restructure it "according to more innovative technological criteria".
