Puducherry AIR`s FM channel commissions new transmitter

Puducherry station of All India Radio (AIR) today
commissioned a state of art new 10 kW transmitter installed at a cost of Rs
2.25 crores. The transmitter of FM channel would provide superior quality
of broadcast of its programme, a release said. The transmitter would help
the channel expand its reach over a radius of 80 kms covering listeners in
Puducherry and neighbouring Tamil Nadu districts of Cuddalore, Villupuram
and Tiruvannamalai, the release said.

First radio broadcast of speech and music in Bulgaria

The first reports about transmission of wireless telegraph radio signals in this country go back to 1903 when the Sofia military garrison made such broadcasts. The first official Bulgarian radio transmitter was operational in the early 1911 on board the Nadezhda cruiser off the Varna coast. A radio telegraph station opened in 1914 in Sofia too, and later three other stations with smaller capacities were launched in the capital's vicinity.

All transmitters used the Morse code for transmission and reception and were of the so-called spark-gap type. At the time they operated it was impossible to listen to any foreign radio stations with speech and music in their vicinity resulting from the powerful jamming created by the spark-gap transmitter. In 1926 the authorities decided to buy new radio telegraph transmitters for dislocation in Sofia. A tender was held that was won by the British company Marconi Wireless. It delivered the devices and in 1929 they were already functioning.

One of them was for telegraph and telephone communications on long waves at a frequency of 105 kHz, and the other two – on shortwave on 7460 and 14970 kHz, for radiotelegraphy. In 1929 Bulgaria had more than 2000 radio subscribers. They listened to speech and music from foreign countries as there was no Bulgarian transmitter available. Under international agreements a Bulgarian transmitter should have the frequency of 1390 kHz, but following the conference in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1929, that frequency changed to 940 kHz.

While the authorities failed to act for the purchase of a transmitter for speech and music, some enthusiasts from the army's radio-technological service decided to carry out the job. In 1929 a group of military technicians led by Georgi Vulkov assembled a radio transmitter for broadcasts of speech and music. Georgi Vulkov was a Bulgarian born in 1902 in Tulchea in present-day Romania. He had graduated from a polytechnic in Germany in 1917 and worked as a radio technician in the army. In 1935 he assembled his own telegraph radio transmitter and came in radio contact with telegraphers from all continents. And so we come to the date of 24 November 1929 when at 9 am Bulgarian time on 210 m or 1429 kHz the words, "Radio Sofia calling" were heard on the air.

This has been recognized as the first radio broadcast in the history of Bulgaria. In the days that followed broadcasts were carried on 350 m or 857 kHz. For the transmission of the programs a receiver antenna 50 m long and 14 m high, was used positioned on the roof of the barracks. The power for the radio transmitter came from a petrol motor with a generator. The transmitter itself was equipped with two Marconi radio bulbs with a capacity of 80 watts each. This was how radio broadcasting in Bulgaria started. It continued using the transmitter of the civil association Rodno Radio (Native Radio). In 1935 the radio became the monopoly of the state.

We had begun to correct this problem across our markets but now the change we make will be highly audible in Mumbai and Delhi. We want Radio One to be different, intelligent, international and involving to 'English speaking' Indians who have a global outlook. Q: Do you think there is a market for an English FM station in the highly dominated Bollywood music culture? VSH: There is a huge misconception about English per say in radio circles. Famous speeches like 'freedom at midnight' or 'tryst with destiny' by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru were made in English on radio. Indians today 'thrive' globally because of their comfort with English as against the Chinese or many other 'non English adopting' countries. So if English or an international feel can do well in infotainment in Print, TV, Internet, Cinema, Outdoor then WHY NOT IN RADIO?. The audience is ready. The radio medium is lagging behind on this front and we aim to correct it. English / International beckons with open arms! Author Skip Arey is now offering his third edition of the popular "Radio Monitoring – A How To Guide" as a free download via the NASWA website. This guide was originally published by Index Publishing Group and later released by Paladin Press–it had two very successful editions that sold for many years.

The guide recently went out of print but Skip has released it on line (for FREE) via Creative Commons license.

The Degen DE321 ($21 US)

Don't be fooled by looks: the Degen DE321 is not your dad's portable shortwave radio. Behind the analog face hides cutting-edge DSP (digital signal processing) technology that makes this slim cell-phone-sized radio a quirky yet pleasing portable. The impact upon your wallet will be slim, as well: this radio will set you back only $21 bucks. One additional note to tuck away–don't hesitate to order the DE321 if you want to put it in your sweetheart's Christmas stocking. There's an approximate two week delivery time, as this radio can only be ordered from vendors in Hong Kong, and airmail doesn't come with a confirmation date. Pint size performer

The Tecsun PL-380 ($55)

When I flew cross-country to visit a friend on the coast of British Columbia earlier this year, I had very limited space in my carry-on bag. I required a radio companion of a modest size, one that performs well on all bands–not just the shortwaves–for I intended to listen to local and distant AM (medium wave) stations, too. My choice was simple: the Tecsun PL-380. This little radio is affordable, compact, and has (especially with the aid of headphones) excellent audio. It's powered by a pretty innovative DSP chip that helps pull stations out of the static, as well.

Keep in mind, if you're planning to purchase any Tecsun product, to allow at least a two week delivery time, especially if ordering from eBay. Occasionally, Kaito (the US distributor of the PL-380) will sell some stock on eBay; in this case, delivery is quicker and the unit carries a US warranty.

Best performance for price

The Tecsun PL-600 ($70.00 US)

Simply put, the Tecsun PL-600 offers the best bang for your buck in 2011. The PL-600 is not the newest offering from Tecsun; in fact, it's a model that has been on the market for several years. (Tecsun's PL-660 is basically the updated version of the PL-600.) For $60, though, you get a very capable, sensitive and selective portable shortwave radio with SSB capabilities and nifty auto-tune features. I liken its performance to the legendary and highly-regarded Grundig G5 (which is no longer in production).

The PL-600 is easy to use, has reasonable audio fidelity from the built-in speaker, and sports a display with all of the essential elements for casual shortwave listening or hard-core DXing. I have found the quality of Tecsun radios to be superb. The PL-600 is a great size/weight for portability–it will easily fit into a suitcase or carry-on–it is not, however, a pocket radio.

It's like a PL-600 on steroids

The Tecsun PL-660 ($100-120 US)

Okay, so forget everything I said about the PL-600 if you're able and willing to invest another $50-60 into your radio gift. The beefier Tecsun PL-660 is new to the market in 2011 and has quickly gained the respect of the shortwave community. It is, in essence, an updated version of the PL-600, with improved performance, sync detection, a band for listening to aircraft, and RDS for displaying FM radio station info. As with other Tecsuns, eBay sellers provide better pricing, but Kaito does sell these radios on Amazon.com as well. If you purchase from Ebay, do so at least two weeks in advance of gift-giving time–again, these radios make a trip from Hong Kong via airmail.

Performance, Audio Fidelity and Simplicity

The Grundig S450DLX ($100 US)

This large portable (along with the C.Crane SW) is still my first pick for someone who wants excellent radio performance, but also wants a radio that is simple and straight-foward, with ease of use in mind (i.e., grandparents, children, your uncle who gets muddled by the TV's remote control). It comes with an owner's manual, but you most likely won't need it. The S450DLX has robust, room-filling sound. Ergonomics are excellent, and it sports a large, comfortable tuning knob. Audio performance is very good and enhanced by its large front-facing speaker. This is not a pocket or travel portable, rather a tabletopportable. The S450DLX will please both the beginner and seasoned radio listener.

Quality and classic performance

The Sony ICF-SW7600GR

The Sony ICF-SW7600GR ($150)

This Sony shortwave radio is a classic, with solid, time-tested performance, and features to please both the beginner and the seasoned radio enthusiast. I like to include different radios each year in the gift guide, but the Sony ICF-SW7600GR is on the list again this year. It's probably the only radio on this list that isn't made in China–it's made in Japan!–and is built, as one of my ham buddies says, "like a brick toilet." (Ahem, just meaning that it's sturdy and reliable). The '7600 will deliver some of the best performance that you'll find in a portable on this page. At $120-150 US, it's not the cheapest on the market, but certainly one of the best. I regret that its days are limited as Sony pulls out of the shortwave market; but mark my words, this one will become a classic.

The Alinco DX-R8T

The Alinco DX-R8T ($499 US)

The Alinco DX-R8T is new to the market in 2011. We reviewed it, in detail, only recently; in short, it impressed us. It's full-featured, performs well, and comes at a very affordable price. If you're buying this for a ham radio operator, they'll understand the reason why the Alinco DX-R8T needs a 12 volt power supply and an external antenna. It's a receiver version of a ham radio transceiver–as such, it does a fine job on SSB modes.

Crazy money? Crazy performance

The Ten-Tec RX-340 ($4,450.00 US)

Let's face it, these are tough economic times. So, you may be wondering why I would put a radio in this list that's priced the same as two Tata Nano passenger cars. Why? Because, if you have the money, I promise the performance of the RX-340 is not likely to disappoint even the most discerning of radio listeners. It is a textbook-perfect, 12.5 lb. example of form following function. Heavy, man. But it is very, very good. Sure, you could buy two hundred (and eleven) lightweight Degen DE321s for that kind of money, but who wants that many portables cluttering up the den when you could lounge by the fire and tune in an RX-340 instead? Close your eyes, sip your favorite scotch, and just…listen to the world.

Zigon does, however, have electricity – unlike 90% of Burmese villages – installed by the government late last year. This has meant a number of changes. One of the more significant is the arrival of television. A satellite dish has now been installed at the village tea shop, largely used to watch state TV networks and Premier League football.
Though censorship has been eased in recent months, information is still tightly controlled. News of the Arab revolts last year was blocked for weeks – though millions use cheap Chinese-made radios to listen to the BBC, Voice of America or other networks broadcasting in local languages.

AIR ESD sending their own QSL cards

All India Radio, External services division is now sending QSL cards directly to overseas listeners, during our (alongwith Anker Petersen & T.R.Rajeesh) vist to AIR ESD in 2010, the Deputy Director & english service presenters said that they are planning to have their own card due to large number of requests received from overseas listeners.

A car radio receiving Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) signals was put for public display at Auto Expo India held in New Delhi (5-11th Jan 2012). Developed by Delphi which is a leading global supplier of electronics and technologies for automotives, the new device can do Analogue AM and FM, as well DRM Digital radio. The receiver uses the NXP processor which recently added DRM capability. Delphi has a history of developing other Digital Radio Platforms (HD, DAB) and is offering solutions tailored to individual OEM requirements. The device is simulcast compatible and also package protected for DRM+ with a DRM compatible receiver antenna (short stub wide band). It should be available for the market by Q4 2012.

CHAK (VU2TTC): THE BLIND GENIUS OF HAM RADIO IN INDIA

Twelve years back, Mr. B.M. Hedge, VU2HEG (who was the Vice-Chairman of Karnataka Regional Engineering College Amateur Radio Club) arranged an amateur radio demonstration-cum-lecture (Perhaps the first informally arranged ham radio demonstration in Guwahati,Assam, attended by a large number of Short Wave Listeners) under the initiative of Sri Deepak Sarma (who had since passed the ASOC Examination but was not receiving his licence. I lost touch with him long time back and don't know whether he received his licence or not).

The ham radio demonstration was attended by many short wave listeners (including me), when OM Hedge, VU2HEG demonstrated us the operation of his state-of-the-art FT-77 transceiver by contacting a very special station located in a small village 170 kms South of Madras. The blind genius of amateur radio-Mr. Chakravarty (fondly known as Chak), VU2TTC introduced himself to us via VU2HEG and an on-the-air lecture was delivered by him. It was a great astonishment to the radio enthusiasts in Guwahati (including me) when they came to know that, Chak, VU2TTC pursued his career in ham radio only when he went completely blind and that he was running a completely home-made radio station to his credit! My friend Sri Deepak Sarma could not even resist his desire to visit Chak personally in his small village.

Deepak collected a copy of "The Hindu" (SUNDAY, JULY 28, 1985) which was carrying an article titled "TUNED TO THE WORLD WITH A HOME BREW". The article was all about the blind genius of ham radio:Chak, VU2TTC, whom we heard through VU2HEG. I have still preserved that article which was given to me by Sri Deepak Sarma as a token of his visit to Chak's (VU2TTC) ham radio shack. I take this opportunity to republish the article in my web-site with acknowledgement to "The Hindu" Newspaper. At this moment I would like to offer my gratitude to OM Hedge, VU2HEG and OM Chakravarthy, VU2TTC, who had greatly inspired me to become a ham radio operator.

TUNED TO THE WORLD WITH A HOME BREW

"EVEN though I cannot see, I am bringing the world to my house through my hobby." These words, stated without any trace of self-pity, sum up the saga of Mr. R. Chakravarthy, the blind ham (amateur radio operator) from Paithambadi-Chatram village, off Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, simply known as "Chak" to hams all over the world.

"Welcome to my shack," he announces as he leads us up a rigged-up ladder to his terrace-shack and proudly displays his "home-brew" amateur radio equipment amidst a tangled skein of wires , supplemented by an array of switches and also points to his new acquisition-sophisticated, imported equipment.

Never one to cavil at his fate or weep over his shoulders, Chak speaks fluent English as he cuts jokes, breaks into whodunits and brands his hobby "a crazy one." And he goes on to illustrate his remark with the story of a hermit who raised a cat to catch the mice wreaking havoc in his hut, then bought a cow to feed the cat with the milk and then engaged a servant to look after the cow. Drawing a parallel, he says, "You can start (on this hobby) with Rs. 200 but may end-up spending As. 2,000 or As. 20.000. This hobby is for experimentation and not entertainment in the field of wireless technology, he pointedly remarks.

How did he get initiated into this hobby (which was almost by fortuitous circumstances) overcoming his crippling handicap and its attendant troubles, and making him a hero among fellow-hams.

Chak lost his eye-sight in 1960 because of a retinal detachment. He was hardly 22 years and had obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) in Mathematics from the Annamalai University. "I was very depressed and spent six years at the Egmore Eye Hospital, spending As. 20,000 trying to regaining my sight but to no avail. Detachment of the retina is incurable." The doctors were, obviously; slowly preparing him for the eventuality.

During his sojourn in the hospital, Chak, however, attended a number of medical conferences on eye diseases and picked up quite a bit on the subject. "I am half a doctor in ophthalmology. I can feel the tension in the eyes of a patient and say whether he suffers from glaucoma or trachoma," He reminisces "Blind patients suffering from stomach-ache used to holler out for nurses and whenever the nurses were absent, I quietly used to administer them distilled water. And when the patients later thanked the nurses. I was found out and given a scolding."

"However, with the light world gone. I turned to the hearing world,” he soon bought a pile of books on electronics and parallel circuits, which were read out to him by the staff nurses and his brother. R. Varadachari, who had been a pillar of strength to him. "I assembled my own radio-set in the hospital in 1961 and slowly developed an interest in electronics. Taking my handicap sportingly, I returned to my village in 1966 and started assembling valve-sets and high-fidelity amplifiers. Long before I took to hamming, I made my hi-fi amplifier system in 1972 (which almost brings down his shack with the blast of Hindi songs) and also assembled an electronic key.

But the rub lay in soldering the joints. Not only did Chak learn soldering wearing gloves but his brother and his nephew helped him in the task while he supplied the circuit ideas.

Chak was married in 1969. "My wife is not worried about leading me anywhere, She is my friend. When I told her about my disability before marriage, her reply was, “What if the person I marry loses his sight afterwards?" (The couple have two daughters and a son-all school-going).

Chak's opportunity to become a ham presented itself in 1974 when he chanced to listen to a ham-station on 41m when he was repairing a transistor-radio, The ham, Prof. Jayaraman, was giving a demonstration on ham radio to the Tiruchur Engineering College students and it was then that he came to understand amateur radio. But to his dismay he found that when he wanted to know more about this amateur radio hobby, no ham gave him his address on the air (which is forbidden) and the nearest hams were in Bangalore and Madras. Luck soon came his way when he read about a ham-station in a receiver-book and also got the ham's address-Mr. Hari Rao of Bangalore.

Chak and his wife met Mr. Hari Rao in Bangalore who asked them to meet Prof. Vasan of Salem. "The tragedy was everybody was prepared to help me but did not know how to help a blind person get into this hobby," he says. It was Prof. "Vasan, who gave Chak the address of Mr. M. V. Chauhan of the Federation of Radio Amateur Societies of India, whose "achievement was to initiate me into the hobby, He has helped me a great deal."

Mr. Chauhan gave him all the assistance to learn the Morse-code and also got him a number of Morse-code recorded cassettes. Mr. K. Mahalingam, President of the Madras Amateur Radio Society, also helped him in this regard.

Another ham-Mr.Seshanandam of Nellore tutored him on the telecommunications part of amateur radio-its rules, regulations, procedures, frequency allocations for hams etc. The lessons were taped and played many times over and he committed them to memory. Meanwhile, he attained a proficiency of sending 30 words a minute-both sending and receiving. He appeared for the Amateur Radio Operators' Certificate Examination in December 1976 with the help of a proxy and attended the viva voce on telecommunications.

However, doubts were raised about his safety. How could he solder and how did he keep his children away from his shack? His reply was, "1 solder with gloves on and my shack is upstairs, free from domestic activity and whenever, I enter my room, I latch it from inside. Besides, all the equipment is on a wooden rafter, above the reach of children."

A visit to his house by an official from the Union Ministry of Telecommunications made his dream come true-he received his ham licence in December 1978. (His call-sign is VU2 TTC). "And finally, on March 9, 1979, I made my first contact with VU2MKS-Kumar of Cochin-with just one watt transistorised transmitter and using my Philips transistor for receiving. It cost me only Rs. 200." he says with a triumphal look on his face.

From then on, he has never looked back. Chak is now the winner of three prestigious awards-the VU9 award of Asiad 82. The Worked Republic of India Award, and The Worked All Continent Award. One among the seven Indians so far to have got the VU9 award for Asiad 82, he bagged it for contacting 532 foreign hams on his home-brew set-up, which is 50 watts on Continuous Wave and 20 watts on Amplitude Modulation. The second award was for contacting 50 other fellow Indian-hams and the "Worked All Continent Award," for establishing contacts with hams in six continents-North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and 1- Oceana (New Zealand and Australia).

However, his big day was when he met Mr. Rajiv Gandhi (a M.P then). who is a ham himself in 1982 at a hams' meet -in Hyderabad. He proudly shows us a -photograph of himself with Mr. Gandh!

"My ambition is to get 100 countries (to contact 100 foreign hams) on 40 m with my home-brew set-up. I have already finished 87 though it is difficult to work with my set-up," he says. In addition, he has already made 30,000 QSOs ) (a communication between two hams is called a QSO). "In all my efforts, my nephew Govindarajan, is my PA ...in electronics," he adds jocularly and shows us the bundle of QSL cards (cards sent by one ham to another whom he has contacted) and jokes about the postal expense entailed on him. "I send thin QSL cards (put in an envelope) to hams abroad to cut down on my postal rates and use thick cards for local hams. I am sure I will be flooded with letters once people read your write-up on me. They should write to me with a self-addressed stamped envelope."

As if to demonstrate his hamming ability, Chak tunes in the transceiver and quickly encounters his friend, Mr. Babu from Pondicherry. Soon Mr. Krishnan Kutty of Trivandrum and Mr. Raman of Karaikudi follow and he has an informal chat with them.

Seeing this reporter trying to break the ice with them, he promptly observes, "This is one hobby where you should be able to master the art of talking about everything and anything with a stranger." Switching over to another band, he works a new contact-a ham from Korea and is quite thrilled about it.

Chak’s ancestral house (he comes from a lineage of Sanskrit scholars) is situated right on the southern banks of the broad “Thenpennaiyar” river and it is in the fitness of things that he should have rescued his villagers from a flood in 1979 by warning them about the impending danger using his transmitter.

He talks excitedly about Steve Baur a fellow-ham from West Germany whom he first contacted in 1980. "He is a close friend now. He came to Paithambadi in 1981 and 1983 and on both the occasions, stayed with me for a fortnight. Mr. Baur has gifted Chak a transceiver, while a Japanese ham, Mr. Kazu Nakamaro gave him the linear amplifier for the transceiver. Mr. Chauhan helped him in clearing them from the Madras Customs, The battery and the battery-charger were gifts from Mr. Babu of Pondicherry and Dr. Samath of Trivandrum.

An exquisite gift, which is of much use to him. however, is a Casio voice-clock, gifted by the ham, Ambadi Bhaskar of Tiruchur. With the press of a button, it announces not only the time, but also the date and month and instructions like "It is time to wake up ,.. it is time to go out etc." It also announces the results of calculations up to eight digits. All the announcements are shown on a display. "Hams from West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Madras come home because of their love and affection for me" : he says.

As we say good-bye to Chak what keeps echoing through our minds are the words of a villager when we asked him: for directions to Chak's house: "Isn't there any possibility of taking him to Madras and have him undergo an eye transplant surgery? He has done so much for our village. He gives tuitions to all the children here." And as Chak himself says, "Coaching children (in school lessons) is my secondary hobby while hamming comes first."

Six New Features Released India-Burma WWII

The Radio Heritage Foundation releases six new features celebrating AFRS radio stations in India and Burma during the 1940's at its global website www.radioheritage.com

2011 is the 70th anniversary of American Armed Forces Radio broadcasts, and the six new features look at AFRS radio in a part of the world that few people today know once had these temporary radio stations.

AFRS India-Burma looks at the network of 16 stations set up in what are now India, Pakistan, Burma and Sri Lanka to entertain and inform US forces during WWII and the campaigns to both protect India and help the Chinese war effort.

AFRS The Ledo Road visits the network of AFRS stations along the famous Ledo Road built to bring supplies by road from Northern India to China via Burma. This feature was written as the stations were closing down.

AFRS WOTO Bhamo is a contemporary look at the 'Wings Over The Orient' radio station in northern Burma, one of the stations along The Ledo Road. This is a fascinating visit inside the operations of one of the most isolated AFRS stations in the region.

AFRS VU2ZP Bangalore introduces the personnel and programs that made this local AFRS station one of the most popular in India during its short time on the air. Rare photos from the private collection of one of the original VU2ZP broadcasters bring extra meaning to the written words.

AFRS VU2ZP Signs-Off is a retrospective of the Bangalore station, including its sleepless monitoring that helped it be the first station in India to report the end of the war in Europe. Again, rare photos of staff and VU2ZP studios make this a special feature.

AFRS VU2ZS Misamari is another contemporary indepth look at the people and programs of the small AFRS station at Misamari.

UNESCO's Executive Board approved item 13 of its  provisional agenda "Proclamation of a World Radio Day" to be celebrated  each 13 February.  It's an interesting initiative, although it probably would have been  more valuable twenty years ago. AWR Wavescan 2011 Contest Winners

Contest Results: Our Big 2011 "Choose a Channel" DX Contest

And now, here is the information you have been waiting to hear. In our program today, we present the results of the recent 2011 Wavescan DX contest that was conducted back during the month of June. The DX contest this year was organized to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Adventist World Radio, and it featured the listening and reporting of all of the stations that can be heard on one particular shortwave frequency, under the title "Choose a Channel" DX Contest. The history of Adventist World Radio goes way back to October 1, 1971, when AWR made its first broadcast on shortwave in a service originating out of Portugal and beamed towards various countries in Europe.
The awards for this year's contest are similar to all previous contests. There will be a special award for the world winner, one of the Jerry Berg radio history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2012 for each continental winner. In addition, there will be other special awards as well as AWR souvenirs and radio curios for many participants.
You can remember that all AWR reception reports will be verified with a specially endorsed AWR QSL card. Please remember that it will take a period of many months, well into the new year 2012, to process all of the contest entries and reception reports, but each will in due course be processed.
There were two surprising facts exhibited in the contest entries this year. One was the magnificent quality of many of the top entries; and the huge number of reception reports included in this year's entries. One entrant submitted 63 reception reports, and two entrants both submitted 45 reception reports each.

Here is our interview with Ms. Marticia Jo, PR manager of MSway:

Q. How long has the MSway DRM receiver been under development?

A. Actually we have started DRM business from 2011. We already made products for T-DMB and DAB and we have been probing DRM market for many years doing government funded projects.

Q. Do you have any development / R&D partners?

We have worked with the lab of Hansin University for years in digital radios.

There is a government funded research institute called KETI (Korean Electronic Technology Institute) and this institute has invested a lot of time and effort for digital broadcasting for several years. They have developed various technologies for almost all global standards and transfer their developed technology to commercial sectors. That's why this institute is funded and audited by government.

MSway licensed KETI's digital radio technology and decided to produce commercial products. Even though we do not have a long history in DRM, the technology and experience from KETI have planted into MSway for DRM and we are confident to deliver commercial products.

Q. What makes the MSway receiver unique?

A. First of all we will make the device affordable. Currently the commercialized DRM radios made by a few companies are too expensive. we will focus on good reception & audio quality with core functions. At the moment we do not have plan to make the device heavy (i.e. equipped with multimedia functions). We will release the basic types of products but we can make customized models upon customers' requests.

We have developed both receivers and monitoring systems (analyzer) and it will enhance the quality of receivers.

Especially the USB type can be extended to HAM communication with antenna change.

Q. What is the main market for the receiver? Will it be available in the USA/North America?

A. Currently we are informed that India officially will launch DRM. Therefore the immediate demand in India is quite promising. Also Brazil and Russia is reviewing DRM for the official launch and DRM consortium people are promoting DRM in those countries. We naturally should aim the markets that have plans to start DRM broadcasting officially like India, Brazil and Russia.

There is a lot of interest from Europe and Australia and we will go to the markets with high interests.

North America? Why not? If there is demand, we will look into the possibilities to launch our products. However we need to study the market very carefully.

Q. Do you have any projected production run and time-frame for the first model/models?

We are getting some actual requests from broadcasters and local distributors in different countries. Throughout IBC show in September we will meet more potential customers for commercial productions.

We have decided to emphasize on the DRM reception with good audio quality to go into the market quickly. Other multimedia functions and other data service function can be added by customers' requests later on. Our ultimate goal at the moment is "spread affordable DRM radios as soon and as many as possible". We will offer both module type and final product type and the customers can decide their release time and date.

If we can meet some actual buyer during the IBC show, we have a time-line to deliver the products within 15 weeks.

We also have a monitoring system for broadcasters and other professionals. KETI have completed field tests in India this year and all the participants and local broadcasters were impressed by the reception and functions.

It is the only monitoring solution supporting both DRM30 and DRM+ at the same time.

We have revised commercialized DAB tuner into DRM tuner and it gave us an exceptional reception result compare to other competitors' products. With KETI's experience in DAB & DAB+ we will create the version with DAB, DAB+ test as well.

I also have something new to share with you. In Korea we started a new government funded project called "WWR (World Wide Radio)". I was also involved in this project when it was proposed last year.

A group of professionals in various sections (I was representing Marketing part) teamed up and wrote a proposal to "Ministry of Information and Economics" in Korea and the government body evaluated submitted proposals and selected some projects to support funds.

This "WWR project" is targeting to produce the chipset which can supports all different global digital radio standards.

The result of project will be producing a chipset that able to receiver DAB, DAB+, DRM, DRM+ and more at the same time within 2 years.

I hope we, MSway, can get benefit out of this project soon.

Q. Could you please give us some background about yourself and MSway?

I studied sociology in a university in Korea and Hotel management in the Lausanne Hotel School, Switzerland, worked in Sweden and England as an hotelier. I have worked in service industry dealing with overseas businesses for 10 years.

Surprisingly I could have started my second career in IT industry as a global marketer. I have been involved in data broadcasting software solutions for digital radio and mobile TV. Starting with DAB, I have promoted solutions in different territories of the world for DVB-T/H, ATSC-MH, T/S-DMB and HD radio. Also I have been involved in some government projects in Korea & Singapore for digital radio. Now I am promoting DRM and I am very proud of being a professional in Digital radio industry.

MSway has been strong in Embedded solution of multimedia chip modules. Our CEO, Mr. M.S. Lee, started MCU application module business for Automotive, medical and Industrial products. Since then we have expanded our business area to PAN(Personal Area Network) and portable multimedia devices.

We have produced PND, PMP with mobile TV and radio functions. Based on our technology & experiences we are planning to create more services & products for Broadcasting-telecommunication convergence.

The BBC World Service has relaunched its Tamil website, with new design and features, including enhanced content-sharing functions, a mobile version and an access to archived radio programmes. Revamped bbctamil.com has a wider format, featuring more convenient and detailed content categorisation. Enhanced with the ability to host video stories, the site also features image galleries, a press release from the BBC said.

In addition to the day's radio programmes, users can now listen to archived materials for up to seven days from the day of the broadcast. They can also share content via online social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

BBC Tamil Editor Thirumalai Manivannan said his team is looking forward to even better engagement with the Tamil-speaking online community. "The re-launched bbctamil.com provides the stories and features in a better organised, more consistent and user-friendly way, which, we believe, will make people want to come back to us. And the ever increasing number of those who engage in online social networking will welcome our new content-sharing features," he added.

Every week, about 690,000 people listen to BBC Tamil broadcasts. The BBC's special Tamil-language infotainment output for India's FM market includes sports, business and showbiz bulletins and is available in Chennai via partner station, Big FM.

Prasar Bharati seeks free land to boost AIR's FM network

New Delhi: Capitalising on the government's strength to stay in competition with the private FM radio broadcasters, public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has sought free land from all state governments to set up its own 500 AIR FM channels (two per city) in over 250 towns. The idea is to operationalise AIR's FM radio stations before the private media firms launch their own FM stations after the government cleared third-phase expansion of private FM radio policy recently which envisages setting up of 839 FM station across 313 towns.

Deutsche Welle will be discontinuing the shortwave broadcast

According to their press release of May 18th (http://dwelle.de/dw/article/0,,6529299,00.html) "Deutsche Welle will be discontinuing the shortwave broadcast for German, Russian, Farsi and Indonesian on November 1, 2011. For English, the shortwave broadcast will be limited to Africa. The broadcasting times for Chinese programming will be reduced from 120 minutes to 60 minutes. Starting in November, DW will only be broadcasting radio programming via shortwave in the following languages: Amharic, Chinese, Dari, English and French for Africa, Hausa, Kiswahili, Pashtu, Portuguese for Africa and Urdu."

"The shortwave program currently broadcasts 260 hours daily with DW's own or rented relay stations – with the new focus on Africa and regions in Asia that will be reduced to just 55 at the beginning of the winter season. Only the relay station in Kigali (Rwanda) will be needed for shortwave broadcasts in Africa. The stations in Trincomalee (Sri Lanka)
and Sines (Portugal) can no longer be used to capacity. The financial operation is no longer possible and the relay stations will stop being used on November 1, 2011 and closed at the next possible point in time." The ‘haunted’ past of Radio Ceylon

Walking into the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) buildings at Torrington Square, one would immediately feel the historical value of the place, but most people would not know just how valuable it is. Our SLBC is Asia's first broadcasting corporation. Radio Ceylon started in Sri Lanka then Ceylon, paving the way for many other radio stations that later came to be celebrated around the world, inspiring countries such as Hong Kong, Korea, India and Singapore to enter the world of wireless media.

DG of SLBC Samantha Weliweriya said that there was even speculation that the SLBC is the world's second radio station. Even if such speculation is not true, he said it is an indication of the importance of Radio Ceylon in the world arena. Radio Ceylon definitely becomes the 30th station in the world, in a line dominated by mostly American and British radio stations, bringing immense pride to Sri Lanka.

And that's not all, there is a hidden past behind the place now occupied by the radio station. According to Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe, who joined the SLBC many decades ago, and has been there ever since, the area was used as a runway during World War II.

The racecourse next to Radio Ceylon was used by the military and some parts of the Radio Ceylon grounds were frequently used for aviation activities which made it difficult to carry out broadcasting functions. Another interesting historical fact is that Radio Ceylon's broadcasting activities were taken over by Allied Forces during World War II and when the war was over, it was handed back to the government.

History began with the arrival of Edward Harper during the time of Sir William Henry Manning. He was the chief engineer of the Telegraph Department and soon began working on wireless broadcasts. The very first experimental broadcast hit the airwaves as early as 1923. Not many people know this fact and believe that the first experimental broadcast was actually made in 1924, but the world had heard us a year earlier from the Telegraph Department, just three years after the inauguration of broadcasting in Europe. Harper and his assistants had broadcast gramophone music as an experiment using radio equipment from a captured German submarine.

Broadcasting heights

The actual launch of Radio Ceylon was in December 1925 by Sir Hugh Clifford. The station came into being after the war and reached broadcasting heights in South Asia, leading the way in the world of entertainment and news. The very first senior management officers of the station came from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). They worked tirelessly to make Radio Ceylon world-recognised, and it indeed was then.

They even did a live coverage of the moon landing and used to cover all major cricket matches before Rupavahini launched its live sports telecasts. Talking about his Western inspirations and knowledge, Salman Rushdie had once said, "I have to express my deep gratitude to what was then called Radio Ceylon. It had a slightly more open attitude and did play Western music, so that's where I became familiar with all kinds of things that I could slightly regret, like the complete works of Ricky Nelson."

Going back to the hidden and interesting past behind the place now known as SLBC, one could not help but mention the word 'haunted'. The old buildings there are over 150 years old and once was home to a lunatic asylum. Standing proud and beautiful even today are the straight and long corridors created especially for the use of a hospital. These corridors have seen many old-fashioned trolleys, mobile beds and other hospital equipment being pushed along by attendants and nurses.

They create a labyrinth inside the institution and even the people most familiar with the place could easily get lost. Some say that staff that work in the evenings and nights have heard peculiar sounds in the dark and isolated corners. Although these are mostly hearsay and speculation, the history behind the place is quite fascinating and could create credible grounds for such stories.

Asylum proper

The Colombo Lunatic Asylum was the first mental hospital in Sri Lanka and was built on the grounds that are now used by the SLBC. Most of its records run as far as 1850, but the very first buildings could have been built many years or decades before that.

It was divided into the asylum proper and the house of observation. Usually, about 700 patients were treated each year at the beginning of the 1900s. Even during the 19th century, in any given year, the number of patients treated always stood above 500.

There was one recorded escape in 1905, but the escapee was later found and brought back. Around the same time there was one attempted suicide. During the first decade of the 20th century, a separate dining hall for females and a dispensary were built. Work on a new mental lunatic asylum began in 1920 at Angoda.

From the beginning, the Colombo Lunatic Asylum was overcrowded and the accommodation provided was inadequate. It was the only mental facility in the country and the superintendent could not turn people away and had to take all patients that came in.

The mortality rate was high and remained above 50 each year. Almost all deaths were due to TB and some were due to malaria. Over 300,000 people are believed to have died of malaria around the 1930s in Sri Lanka.

Torrington Square, Colombo 7, Colombo 5 and the surrounding areas were bushland then, and were known as Kumbi Kele (ant forest) and the asylum grounds were quite large. Therefore, a corner of the land was also used as the hospital's cemetery for bodies that were not claimed by families.

The hospital had a large mortuary; this room is still there but remains closed. Berty Galahitiyawa, a veteran announcer joined the SLBC in 1962, and retired as Director-Training. He recalls the cafeteria in the '60s which was near the mortuary, and some of his friends talking about hearing strange sounds emanating from it while they were having their tea breaks during the evening's broadcast. “We did not believe it, but we knew there was a closed-down mortuary adjacent to the cafeteria. Later on, many studios were built around it” he said.

Eerily silent

Ironically, there is a cafeteria there even today.

Frederick Fiebig was originally an artiste and lithographer in Calcutta in the 1840s. When he visited Sri Lanka in 1852 he had taken a black and white picture of the SLBC which was later hand-coloured.

Even today, its long corridors are eerily silent with memories of the past, not merely because of the way it was built for patient transport.

There are framed photographs of legends in broadcasting and other important figures that were associated with the place. Sunil Shantha, Rukmani Devi, Ananda Samarakoon and Premakeerthi de Alwis are some of those who are no more .

In 1954, when Queen Elizabeth II visited Sri Lanka, a Radio Ceylon van equipped with a disc-cutting machine was sent along with her to record the important events.

An interesting fact about Radio Ceylon is that after conquering Mount Everest, Edmond Hillary and Tenzing Norgay turned on their transistor radio and the first thing they heard was an overseas broadcast on the English All Asia service of Radio Ceylon.

The place now known as SLBC, most fondly remembered as 'Radio Ceylon' is a legend of its own with a colourful, eerie and romantic past.

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University e- Radio Broadcasting Station is implemented as per the policies approved of the Government of India for the grant of licenses for setting up of such stations to well established educational institutions. The present project is implemented by Media Lab Asia in collaboration with World Development Foundation, New Delhi for TNAU, Coimbatore.

Functionally, Community Radio means radio broadcasting with the objective of serving the cause of the Community in the service area by involving members of the community in the broadcast of their programmes.

The TNAU, Community Radio Station which has the coverage of 15 to 20 km, has the feature of 'e' component in it and hence the broadcast programme is integrated into the e – Extension network.

Handling Community e – Radio is an interesting and creative task. All the three types of intelligence viz., abstract, mechanical and social, are judiciously utilized in this ICT tool for making the programmes informative as well as interesting.

Objectives

To compile, record, edit and fine tune the content of the technologies for the benefit of farmers, farm women, youth and other stakeholders in the broad domain of agriculture and rural development.
To ensure 'Out of Box' thinking in the mode and delivery of messages for capturing the attention of the listeners.
To conduct "on line phone – in" programmes.
To upload the contents in the TNAU Agri Portal for wider coverage and utility.
To perform as multimedia platform for creation, sharing and dissemination of agricultural information's among farmers and experts.
To be a quality "Content Developing Centre" for other media units in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
To serve as 'Skill Training' hub for community radio professionals.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University community radio commences farm broadcast

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) community radio station here has commenced farm broadcast.

According to a TNAU press released issued today the community radio is an effective ICT tool and people-friendly, socially committed and professionally managed transfer of technology mechanism.

Rural-centric programmes are preferred through the Community Radio Station which has been named as "Velaan Palkalaikkazhaga Vivasayee FM". Listeners can tune in to 107.4 MHz for exclusive farm related information. The coverage area of the broadcast is upto 18 km radius benefiting approximately 10,000 farm families in 22 villages, besides general public. The broadcast is made during 1030 hrs to 1300 hrs every day.

Vivasayee FM will enable to reach all members of the community in the local language and as a local grassroot media, it maximizes the potential for sharing information, knowledge and skills.

This creative medium will focus on topics relating to agriculture, health, environment, education and community development. Latest farm technologies, market price of commodities and weather forecasts will be broadcasted regularly. Besides, farmers experiences and success stories, services of NGOs, and other educational programmes will also be part of the broadcast.

Progressive farmers can share their experiences through the FM radio that would encourage fellow farmers, the release added.
